Area Companies Dominate Inc. 500 List of
Fastest-Growing Companies Once Again
August 21, 2008; Washington , DC – For the twelfth consecutive year, the Greater Washington region has the largest number of fastest-growing private companies in America, according to Inc. Magazine.
This year, the region had 45 area companies on the 2008 Inc. 500 list. New York is second, with 31, followed by Atlanta with 29 companies, Chicago at 27 companies, and Los Angeles with 26.
The 45 area companies cross many industries; the top two industries are government services (16 companies) and IT services (9 companies). Other top industries represented are: business services, software and real estate.
“The 2008 Inc. 500 list confirms Greater Washington’s continued strength as an outstanding business location for firms of all sizes,” said Matt Erskine, executive director of the Greater Washington Initiative.“ Our concentration of highly-educated workers and smart entrepreneurial managers continue to drive our economy forward.”
Total revenues for the region’s 45 fast-growing firms are almost $1.2 billion and collectively employ nearly 5,300 individuals.
“Greater Washington is clearly sending the message that this is a region where business gets done,” said Erskine. “Companies that decide to relocate or expand here thrive in our diverse, steady and stable economy.”
The 2008 Inc. 500/5000 list measures revenue growth from 2004 through 2007. To qualify, companies must be U.S.-based and privately held, independent – not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies – as of December 31, 2007, and have had at least $200,000 in revenue in 2004, and $2 million in 2007.
