The Chesapeake Innovation Center, America’s first homeland and national security accelerator connects major users of technology with small, innovative companies at the forefront of technology. TechBridge, our unique, innovative program brings win-win outcomes to both sides of the technology supply and demand cycle. Our Partners, strategic to America’s national security, include The Boeing Company, Northrop Grumman Corporation, ARINC, the National Security Agency, Next Century Corporation, Athlone Global Security and the list is growing. These organizations seek innovation. We provide it by sourcing and screening early stage technology companies. Think of it as the “eHarmony” of the tech world... a streamlined process matching technology customers with well-suited technology innovators. TechBridge offers qualified customers for innovative tech companies which can dramatically shorter sales cycles, find strategic or financial partners, increase ones visibility in the marketplace and even get feedback from the marketplace itself
CIC also offers sophisticated and complete security and government programming by providing a platform US to launch into the US market. The Mason Enterprise Center provides broad business development services, under such programs as our 29 Virginia Small Business Development Centers, Mentor-Protege Program and PTAP (Procurement and Technical Assistance Program) which are available to participating incubator companies. The Center has an excellent track record for growth of companies and completed substantial expansions in both 2002 and again in 2004.

Montgomery County Business Innovation Network
Managed by the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development, the Business Innovation Network offers the infrastructure and resources needed to facilitate the growth and success of young biotech, advanced technology and business service companies. The Montgomery County Business innovation network spans 5 facilities spread throughout the county, each with access to resources such as the University of Maryland Legal Resource Center, Accounting and financial consulting,affiliations with Maryland Tech Council and the World Trade Center Institute, as well as business support provided by on-site Business Development Specialists. With over 125,000 square feet spread across four facilities in Rockville, Shady Grove, Silver Spring and Wheaton as well as another 30,000 square feet planned for Germantown, the Montgomery County Business Innovation Network is certainly one of the regions most extensive business networks and home to some of the areas most exciting small businesses.

Built as the first of Montgomery County’s Business Innovation Center’s, Maryland Technology Development Center (MTDC) was created as a joint partnership between Montgomery County and the State of Maryland. The facility has 24 modular wet labs, fully fitted with work/lab benches, sinks and fume hoods as well as 60 offices that vary in size from 120 sq. feet to as large as 600 sq. feet. MTDC is a shining example of Montgomery County’s success, boasting graduate such as Aeras Global Foundation, Nextone, and Avalon Pharmaceuticals.

The Prince George’s County Technology Assistance Center (TAC) Incubator provides shared services, managerial and technical assistance and flexible office space for small technology firms, with an emphasis on government contractors in IT sectors. The Prince George’s Small Business Initiative, which is located in the same office suite, provides business counseling assistance. Also co-located with the TAC, are the offices of the Princes George’s Financial Services Corporation and a regional branch of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development. EDC staff helps to connect incubator companies to a variety of financing and venture capital providers, technology commercialization partners and networking opportunities as well as providing technical assistance and training for women and minority-owned businesses who wish to learn how to successfully win Federal SBIR and STTR grants.

TAP is a leading incubator and accelerator which assists early-stage technology companies achieve their goals. TAP expedites the maturation of young firms by providing a unique bundle of services and resources ranging from intense mentoring and funding introductions to extensive technical resources and low-cost physical infrastructure. Since 1986, TAP has successfully incubated nearly 58 diverse emerging companies which now include biotech industry leaders and numerous thriving niche enterprises. Graduates have raised almost $750 million in venture investments, grants, public stock offerings, and proceeds from the sale of companies. TAP favorably considers new companies developing and offering products and services based on advances in engineering, computer science, information technologies and bioscience. TAP is program of University of Maryland and was the first incubator in the State of Maryland.

AES is a facility for start up biotechnology businesses and has been in operation since 1985. Over 25 companies have started their operations at AES. It is privately held and is located in a 40,000 square foot building in Rockville Maryland. The building is a modern, state of the art, biological laboratory offering wet lab space from small (200 sq.ft) to large (3,000 sq ft). Member companies share all the common areas of the facility such as: lunch room, conference rooms, AAALAC approved animal facilities, warehouse space, low temperature repository space, autoclaves, environmental rooms and clean rooms where material can be manufactured and packaged under GLP conditions. Member companies are also given memberships to all the standing committees such as occupational health and safety, general laboratory safety, radioactive isotope and the like, which must be in place for any biotechnology company to function. In addition, members are given professional advise, ranging from preparation of business plans, implementation of employee benefits to real estate planning for when they relocate when leaving AES. There is no prescribed tenure and businesses graduate when they are ready to leave. Furthermore, there have been no business failures to date.

The Center for Business and Technology Development, part of the Howard County Economic Development Authority, is home to NeoTech and a Business Resource Center. The Center was created to assist start-up firms in the areas of computer hardware and software development, telecommunications hardware development, and Internet and Web development. The NeoTech offers hands-on management assistance while providing shared services such as conference rooms, Internet/cable access, a Small Business Library, and a variety of business development resources. The main goal of the NeoTech is to graduate businesses that are financially viable and self-sufficient.
