Updated Directory of Local Network Security Firms Released by Greater Washington Initiative
Washington, DC; March 31, 2004 -- An updated directory to help businesses access technology needed to improve cyber security is available from the Greater Washington Initiative (GWI), a regional economic development marketing organization. The Greater Washington Network Security Directory is now available, online at www.greaterwashington.org.
In company descriptions, directory firms indicate their specialty in 20 different cyber security categories including Authentication, Biometrics, Cryptography, Risk Analysis, Penetration Testing, Virus Protection and Virtual Private Networks. These listings will make it easier for government and private sector executives around the globe to identify potential partners or suppliers among companies in the Washington, DC region. The directory will also be used by GWI to attract additional security companies to join this robust business cluster.
In addition to the directory listing of 94 regional network security firms (an increase from 81 firms listed in 2003), the online publication includes a brief overview and analysis conducted by GWI. The analysis revealed:
4,064 workers are employed regionally in network security, an increase of 5% since last year’s publication.
The majority of firms in the directory (77%) contract with private industry; 66% contract with the federal government; local and state government was reported by 35% and 37%, respectively.
The directory firms operate offices in 51 different countries throughout the world.
This updated directory is particularly timely in today’s environment, when network security is top-of-mind for many business and government leaders,” said John M. Derrick, Jr., GWI Chairman and Chairman of Pepco Holdings, Inc. “This enhanced resource can help local companies connect to these firms, while also helping raise awareness of a growing business cluster in Greater Washington.”
In 2003, GWI distributed a survey to more than 500 regional firms, and released a Directory of 81 companies. The 94 firms now listed in the Greater Washington Network Security Directory represent those who responded to the survey. The release of the updated directory coincides with the 2004 Homeland and Global Security Summit, March 31-April 1 at the Washington Convention Center. GWI will continue to update the directory; listings are complimentary.
