William Couper is New Chair of Regional Economic
Development Organization
July 1, 2004; Washington , DC – William Couper, President of Bank of America, Greater Washington, is the new chairman of the Greater Washington Initiative (GWI), the regional economic development marketing organization. He assumes the volunteer leadership role previously held by John Derrick, recently retired Chairman of Pepco Holdings, who served as GWI’s chairman since 2002.
"Bill Couper has been an engaged member of our Board, actively participating in domestic and international marketing missions and other major business development initiatives,” said Thomas Morr, GWI Managing Partner. “We are excited about working with him more closely in the months ahead. He is a strong community leader and brings expertise in regional economic development since he was active in the Maryland Economic Development Commission.”
Couper joined American Security Bank, a Bank of America predecessor in 1972, and served in several capacities in retail banking and strategic planning. He was vice chairman of Virginia Federal Savings Bank in Richmond, VA and was named president of the bank’s Greater Baltimore Region in 1995. In 2000, he returned to Washington to assume his current position.
Active in civic affairs, Couper also serves on the Board of the Greater Washington Board of Trade and is currently Chairman of the United Way of the National Capital Area and immediate past chairman of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. Bank of America has participated in GWI’s Executive Committee since 2000.
