New Information Technology Industry Overview Available:
Highlights Area Strengths, Spending Trends, and New Projects

July 20, 2006; Washington, DC -- The Greater Washington Initiative (GWI), the region’s economic development marketing organization, released a new publication highlighting the area’s IT resources. The 6-page overview augments a 2005 GWI study, Information Technology, Communications and New Media in Greater Washington, by adding updated information on current projects and federal spending trends.

GWI and its partners will use the overview to promote the region as one of the nation’s top centers for information technology.

In addition to a full-page map highlighting more than 130 of the region’s leading IT firms, the publication includes analysis conducted by GWI. The analysis reveals:

  • Nearly 333,000, or one in ten, employees in Greater Washington are part of the technology workforce, more than twice the national average.
  • In 2006, the federal government is expected to spend $26.7 billion ($36% of the total IT budget) on IT products and serves in Greater Washington.
  • More than 2,000 companies belong to one of the region’s three major technology associations: the Northern Virginia Technology Council, the Tech Council of Maryland and the Washington, DC Technology Council.
