Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber of Commerce forms alliance in Greater Washington, D.C.
December 10, 2003 - St. John’s, NL -- As a result of its participation in the recent Team Canada Atlantic trade mission to Washington, D.C., the Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber of Commerce (NLCC) signed a strategic alliance agreement with the Greater Washington Initiative (GWI) to develop business opportunities and increase awareness of each other’s markets and potential partnerships.Marilyn Thompson, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber of Commerce and Thomas G. Morr, managing partner of GWI participated in the signing ceremony, which took place November 5, 2003 at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Centre in Washington, D.C. The strategic alliance agreement was a primary objective for the NLCC on this trade mission.
Founded in 1974, the Newfoundland and Labrador Chamber of Commerce is the province’s largest and most representative business association. The NLCC, a not-for-profit corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, represents 26 local chambers of commerce/boards of trade comprising some 2,700 companies in Newfoundland and Labrador. Its mandate is to foster trade and commerce, stimulate civic development and promote the welfare of the community.
The Greater Washington Initiative is a regional co-operative economic development marketing organization that promotes the Greater Washington area as an ideal location for locating or expanding a business. GWI is a non‑profit affiliate of the Greater Washington Board of Trade and works in conjunction with local private companies and all area economic development organizations in Northern Virginia, Suburban Maryland and the District of Columbia.
“Building relationships helps build business, and this alliance is based on the principle that people conduct business with friends,” said Thomas Morr. “Our organizations plan to aggressively build business and personal linkages between our communities with the overarching goal to create economic growth and jobs in each region.”
“Our countries share a common interest in a strong economic environment. If our economies are doing well we each benefit and we are both challenged if they shrink. Business organizations can take the lead in working together to advance our economic interests,” said Dr. Thompson. “This alliance is designed to improve communication among the major players in our regions, serve as a vehicle for developing common perspectives on the performance of our economies, and identify key areas where we need to work together to address specific challenges.”
