“The Business of Government” Supplement to Appear in Washington Flyer.

As you’re traveling through Washington Dulles or Ronald Reagan National airports during May and June, pick up a copy of Washington Flyer to review “The Business of Government,” a publication developed by the Greater Washington Initiative and produced by Washington Flyer magazine. The updated publication, which will serve as a GWI marketing tool, features articles about the advantages of the GSA Schedule, how to work effectively with the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security and a handy list of online and print resources. Canadian Mission Accomplished: Region Promoted to our Northern Neighbors.
Last week, GWI’s Business Development team promoted the area’s assets and opportunities to approximately 50 Canadian executives at a series of conferences in Calgary, Halifax and Montreal. A collaborative effort of GWI and several Canadian business groups, the seminars targeted firms specializing in homeland security, hardware/software, defense, IT, aerospace and telecom/wireless. Speakers included representatives from the General Services Administration, Bank of America, Aronson & Company and Foley & Lardner. Read more

GWI Connects Regional Business Executives with Potential Partners in Atlantic Canada.
More than 100 local business leaders networked with private and public sector officials from the Atlantic Canada provinces earlier this week at a reception hosted by GWI in conjunction with Team Canada Atlantic (TCA) - a joint program of the Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency and the provincial governments of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. TCA brought a delegation to the area to conduct one-on-one meetings with local distributors and partners. This trip is part of a continuing effort by TCA and GWI aimed at growing business in the Greater Washington region. Annual GSA Business Expo will include Workshop on Greater Washington.
At the 2004 GSA Expo in Orlando, FL on May 11, GWI will conduct a free workshop highlighting successful strategies for selling to the U.S. government. The Expo draws an estimated 5,000 government buyers and sellers from across the country. Expert workshop participants include Larry Allen, Coalition for Government Procurement; Tim Priest, Greater Washington Initiative; Steven Robinson, Knoll; and Tom Spouse, FDM Group, Inc. Economic Development News from Across the Region


Anne Arundel County, MD:
A business plan for Odenton Town Center and the “Maryland 175” commercial revitalization district will be presented on May 5 at the Anne Arundel Commercial and Industrial Association’s membership meeting. The meeting marks the first public presentation of the business plan, commissioned by the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation in partnership with Anne Arundel Community Development Services. A panel of experts will offer details, updates and developments. More info

Arlington County, VA: Local partners in the World Cities Alliance recently traveled to France to help drive business partnerships and incorporate incubators and technology parks in various metro regions. Arlington economic development officials, along with GWI and other jurisdictions in Greater Washington, represent the area in the Alliance. Details

District of Columbia: Earlier this month, financial execs from Scotland joined Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), co-investor Charles Dubroff and other DC officials for the ground-breaking of Capitol Hill Tower, the first hotel and private residential development in Southeast. Located at the corner of New Jersey and L Streets, Capitol Hill Tower will include 344 market rate units for middle-income families, a 232-space parking garage and a 200-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel. The Bank of Scotland is providing $21 million in financing for the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2006. Learn more

Fairfax County, VA: The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority hosted meetings for nine Argentine info tech companies looking to establish partnerships, customers and strategic alliances with U.S. firms. The meetings with Virginia companies were part of a three-day mission organized by the Embassy of Argentina in DC. Products and services involved included software development, eLearning systems, call centers, systems for oil and industrial processes and financial administration. Details

Howard County, MD: Ahold Federal Credit Union recently purchased a 22,000 square-foot building in the town of Savage for $2.7 million. As the site of its new headquarters, the credit union plans to occupy about two-thirds of the single-story building, with the remaining 7,000 square feet under lease. The move is scheduled for completion by late 2004. Contact Nicole Robinson for more information.

Loudoun County, VA: The Loudoun County Design Cabinet, in cooperation with Main Street Loudoun and the Town of Purcellville, held a design charette, the latest phase in the design process for the redevelopment of the IGA shopping center. Working with property owner reps and town officials, the Cabinet - a volunteer group of architects and urban designers - works to reinforce Loudoun's sense of identity and community through high-quality physical design. St. Mary’s County, MD: Rep. Steny Hoyer (D) helped break ground on a $21 million project at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River. The renovated aircraft hangar and adjacent buildings will be used to test the military's new Joint Strike Fighter jet, history's largest defense acquisition. Since this project has international partners, St. Mary's County looks forward to welcoming visitors from around the world during the testing of the jet.
