Greater Washington’s economy is increasingly diverse, and its structure — supported by robust business and professional services and technology sectors — represents the model for sustainable growth in large metropolitan areas.

Over the past three decades, with the growth of the professional and business services and technology sectors, the share of our population employed by the federal government has shrunk to a little more than 11 percent. Over this same period, Greater Washington led the nation in overall employment growth.

Greater Washington has witnessed a remarkable increase in professional and business services employment over the past decade. From 1998 to 2008, Greater Washington led the nation in professional & business employment growth, adding almost 50 percent more jobs compared to second place New York, and 200 percent more jobs compared to third place Dallas-Fort Worth.
