Residents and visitors can choose from an ever-changing list of 8,000+ restaurants and bars. There’s every imaginable cuisine available and hundreds of venues offering live music (from jazz to alternative rock). In 2003, Greater Washington’s food and drink sales reached $9.5 billion.

The area’s affluent community has drawn every major retailer to the area. The largest shopping center in the region, Potomac Mills, has even become a Northern Virginia tourist attraction. In 2003, residents and visitors in the region spent nearly $69 billion on retail items, including $8.4 billion at general merchandise stores and $5.8 billion on furniture and appliances.
